Kwathu Children’s Home is currently home to twenty beautiful children. Each aspect of our home is designed to provide for the needs of the children, facilitate their growth and education, and provide a family atmosphere that shows each child that they are valued and loved. Our home is divided in to six rooms:
- 1 for the house mothers,
- 1 for the older girls
- 1 for the toddlers
- 1 for the older boys
- a play room, and
- a tailoring and workshop room.
One house mother and one assistant work alongside Agrippa and Jeanette to perform various tasks to care for and love the children. The house mothers wake up early in the morning, around 5 A.M. to go to the kitchen and prepare the children’s breakfast, and to awaken the children to go to school. They work together to prepare the children for school, awakening them, getting them into their uniforms, and ensuring they have their books and tools to study. Either one of the housemothers or Jeanette take the children to school in a van, and return to take care of the younger children who are not yet of age for school, and the children who are sick. Like in any family or household with so many children, much must be done in the time that the children are at school. Hospital visits, lunch preparation, community efforts involving the Farming & Tailoring programs, administrative work to keep Kwathu Children’s Home running, and so much more happens before they prepare dinner and pick up the children from school. Then, one of the mothers picks them up and brings them home.
The children live together as brothers and sisters. They eat together and share meals at three big family dining tables. They study together, and work together on their computer skills in our computer corner. They socialize and have fun together, either outside in front of the main building, or in the living room where they can watch cartoons or movies. We celebrate each child’s birthday as a family. At Kwathu Children’s Home, we do our best to make every child feel as a beloved part of our family, in a real setup of a home.
