September 2020 Newsletter

BIRTHDAYS – Prisca turned 3 years on 22nd September. This was the first birthday that she celebrated with the Kwathu family and we were all happy to be part of this special day.

SCHOOLS – School has resumed for everyone with strict health guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19 after closing for 6 months for those in non-examination classes. Children in examination classes grades (7, 9 & 12) opened on 14th September while the rest opened on 21st September 2020. They are all happy to get back in school.

Generally, our children are great and have continued with the usual routines at home which are packed with different activities for play and learning time. We are grateful to the Department of Social Welfare for donating face masks, liquid hand wash, a thermo-gun, gloves, and a drum to be placed at the entrance of the facility for washing hands.

SCHOOL REPORT

Kwathu Private school closed its second term for examination class on 28th August 2020. The children were on a short break for only two weeks. Therefore, on Monday 14th September, the examination class which is grade seven reported for school.

The learners were very anxious to be back in school because they wanted to hear and see the mock examination results which they wrote in their second term. The performance for the grade seven mock examination was good and the pass rate percentage was at 90%. The highest pupil got 755 marks and the lowest got 587 marks.

A week after examination class opened, non-examination classes were directed to be back in school. The pupils in these classes were very much happy because they have been home since 20th March 2020 when all classes were told to be home so that they can be safe from COVID-19. With the reporting of the other classes, the school is now back to its normal operation.

This is a Thermogun donated by Ministry of Community Development and Social Welfare:

However, the schools were given health guidelines that should be followed so that the learners remain safe and healthy. Not having more than 23 learners in class is one of the restrictions that schools were told to follow. From the opening week, Kwathu teachers have been observing the attendance of the learners to see how they will report. The second week from the opening of non-examination classes the attendance has been good and not more than 23 in each class apart from the baby class who are currently 28 in class. With that in mind, baby class will be split into two classes and the classes will be alternating. Each class will have their specific day of coming to school, this is according to the guidelines from the ministry of education.

DONATIONS

This month of September was so tough as we did not receive much of donations. The issue of schools opening abruptly could have affected most people who wanted to donate. They were busy paying for school fees of their children. Thank you to Shoprite-Livingstone who donated some perishable food items.

CLINIC PROJECT

The project is slowly but surely making progress. Ministry of Health through the District Health Office (DHO) came to carry out some inspection on the modified container (soon to be a clinic.) They advised we put up 3 toilets for community use as they come to access services, benches, water basins, air-conditioning and many more essential parts to consider.

COMMUNITY FEEDING PROGRAM

Kwathu community feeding program has continued to help the less privileged around our community. This a program which many of the beneficiaries have appreciated greatly. It has served lives, homes, families, and the bigger community at large.
