Outreach Programs: We visited several families this month, especially those with children attending the Kwathu Free Haven Community School, to see how they are doing and learn of the challenges they are currently facing. The challenges range from lack of access to education, health services and decent food and clothing.
One of our partners, Linda Mtonga, is sponsoring 13 kids at Kwathu Free Haven School with uniforms, shoes, school bags, books, and other necessities. We are so thankful!
Birthdays: Rhodia (in white top and black leggings on far right) celebrated her 16th birthday on October 3rd. Lackson turned 6 on the 10th of October and Alex also turned 6 on the 30th of October.
Rhodia had an outing with the girls to celebrate her day while Lackson (with knife ready to cut his cake) and Alex (in checkered shirt) celebrated with their mates.
The children have continued to attend school in their various schools, respectively. We as a team are also encouraging the kids, especially those in examination classes, to work extra hard as their exams are approaching.
Donations: We received a donation of mealie meal and other assorted goods from Ashok Surati and a friend of his whom he brought to donate to our home.
School: Kwathu Free Haven Community School has been operating well since it resumed its learning and teaching schedule for its second term. However, the second term is for the non-examination classes while the grade sevens, who are writing their final exam, are in their third term. This calendar difference is due to the closure of schools of which only examination classes were told to resume their learning while others where home. The school has continued to host a number of activities for the children. The Preventive Maintenance System (PMS) has been one of the on-going programs within the school. It is the activity which the pupils participate in every Wednesday to keep the surrounding clean. Since it began, the school has been maintained well and kept clean.
The month of October has had a special day on which the learners were told to be home. This specific day was declared by His Excellence, the president of the republic of Zambia, as a National Day of Prayer. The day was on Sunday 18th, but the commemoration was the following Monday.
In addition to participating in the National Day of Prayer, the school joined the nation in celebrating the country’s Independence Day which was on Saturday, October 24th. Since the school does not have lessons on Saturdays, the celebration was hosted on Friday. The learners were extremely excited about the event; on that day they wore Zambian colors that are found on the flag of Zambia. Some of the pictures for the day be seen below.
