August 2020 Newsletter

BIRTHDAYS: On 15th August, Edward turned 6 years old. He was extremely excited to celebrate his first birthday at Kwathu with the other children.

PLAY-TIME: With this long un-programmed holiday for non-examination classes, there are a lot of in door and outdoor activities that children undertake in, with the help of an adult supervising them. As much as it might seem to be a disadvantage, it is also a good time to make use of every opportunity available to the children to discover their hidden abilities. The pictures below show the kids at the home during play-time.

SCHOOLS: Children in grade 7 (Rhodia), grade 9 (Obet, Rosaria and Purity) and grade 12 (Eustus) wrote their mock examinations in preparation for the final examinations next term. The children are all doing fine. Willard has continued with the farming training and he spends most of his days at the farm learning more and implementing his skills and knowledge. Since schools are closing, everyone will be home to spend some time together, especially for Eustus and Obet who are in boarding school. Their brothers and sisters are looking forward to having them back although it will only be for two weeks.

Kwathu Free Haven School has continued to operate well since it resumed its learning and teaching schedule in June 2020. The school has had a lot of activities taking place. Preventive Maintenance System (PMS) has been one of the on-going programs within the school. The pupils participate every Wednesday in this activity to help keep the surrounding clean. Since it began, the school has always been kept clean. Flowers were planted at the school to make it look more good as seen in the pictures below.

In the month of August, the pupils have been anxiously waiting to write their district mock examination which is under Livingstone Independent Schools Organisation (LISO.) They started writing their mock examinations on Monday 24th August. The examinations were ongoing from the 24th to 27th August 2020.

The exam was interesting for them as it was preparing them for their final exam in December. After each paper that they wrote, a daily survey was done by the class teachers to find out how the exam was. To most of the pupils, the response was very positive.

Kwathu School follows the calendar, regulations and guidelines from the government. According to the plan from the Ministry of Education, schools in Zambia were guided to end the second term on Friday, August 28th, 2020. Therefore, the school officially closed on the date directed from the ministry. However, the holiday was only for two weeks. The pupils were given work to do during the holiday so that they are kept busy with schoolwork rather than just playing around.

DONATIONS: Kwathu received some donations in the month of August. Shoprite-Livingstone, through its committed clients and customers who made personal contributions in the trolley, shared donations with us. Thank you so much for choosing Kwathu Ministries.

We also received a donation of large bags of mealie meal from Ashok Surati. Thank you so much for your consistency in helping in a variety of ways each month.

KWATHU COMMUNITY FEEDING: Feeding the surrounding community and beyond the Kwathu catchment area is very exciting, but also challenging. Providing meals for families is exciting in that it always gives us joy when we reach out to those in need, but challenging in that we would love to help as many as possible and the limitation is on lack of adequate finances for the program. Currently we can only feed a limited number of people, approximately 100-120 each week.

Every Friday when conducting the feeding program, we always have people who still need food but we are not able to provide for them because of the limitation on the available food.

GIVING BACK: Kwathu is not only a receiver but more of a giver in many aspects ranging from food, clothing, diapers etc. Below are some of the families, near and far, that Kwathu Ministries helped in the month of August with various items such as blankets, sugar, soap, clothes, mealie meal and relish.
