Bible Quote

Colossians 3:15-17

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Motivational Quote

“Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.”

Vicky turned into a 5 year old little princess on the 26th of February. She enjoyed her party with the Kwathu toddlers and some of her school friends.

She couldn’t wait to have a big piece of the lovely chocolate made for her by mama and papa.

We wish her more happy returns and an adventurous 5th year!!

KWATHU HOME

February has been a bittersweet month for the Kwathu family as two of our children were re- integrated back with their mother. It was a sad sight to witness the two children leave as we got so attached to them. Attachments are really important for emotional, physical and mental growth. The past 5 months that these children stayed with us really made an impact in the lives of many. We are so glad that they are re-united with their mother now and we pray for stronger bonds between them and wish them a happy and healthy stay with their mother and relatives.

EDUCATION

Kwathu Free Haven Community School

Here are highlights of the Kwathu Free Haven School report compiled by the Head teacher Mr. Gilbert Chirwa.

o Registration Process
Registration of the school is still under way; the Head teacher visited the District Education Board Secretary’s office, (DEB’s) and he was advised that in each district there is an association which guides independent schools on how to register. The same association acts as a link between the independent schools and the Ministry of General Education. In Livingstone the association is called “Livingstone Independent Schools Organization” (LISO), the organization is there to speak on behalf of independent schools which are affiliated to the same institution and work hand in hand with the Ministry of General Education to see that the schools that are not registered are registered and also affiliated to LISO.

o School Enrollment
Due to limited places, we were only able to give space to some pupils in baby class to grade six, except grade one class because of its capacity. Some pupils were recommended to join the baby class and reception while others were pushed into grade one when they reported, due to age. The statistics are as shown by the table below;

NUMBER OF PUPILS AS PER CLASS

ITEM GRADES/CLASSES BOYS GIRLS TOTAL
1 Baby class 10 13 23
2 Reception class 12 9 21
3 Grade one (1) 16 22 38
4 Grade two (2) 16 18 34
5 Grade three (3) 14 13 27
6 Grade four (4) 12 12 24
7 Grade five (5) 13 14 27
8 Grade six (6) 11 14 25
TOTAL NUMBER OF PUPILS 104 115 219

o Successes

Through the grace of our Lord, we have managed to achieve a lot of successes together as Kwathu family in a short period for the betterment of the Zambian child. Some successes include:

1. Having teaching materials in place
2. Opening the school as announced by the government
3. Our school staff have been attending workshops organized by school zone
4. Pupils report to school authorities when they are not coming to school due to various reasons such as sickness or funeral
5. Slowly both parents/guardians and pupils are now understanding that we are a school just like any other school in Zambia and hence academic rules should be followed at all cost if we are to produce good pupils in a holistic way
6. Parents/guardians have seen a change in the way their pupils are learning now, compared to last year. Every time they visit the Head teacher’s office, they say “you are now doing a good job, compared to last year.”
7. Learner’s attendance in all classes is outstanding
8. Renovation and painting of the schools in all the classrooms

o Challenges

1. Some text books which were not bought for teachers should be looked into for better lesson delivery
2. Ceiling board to be put in classes for effective learning
3. Play park to be maintained

o Conclusion
We are on the right track with committed members of staff and pupils who are committed to learning. We appreciate everyone who is involved in making the school run successfully. The school is really helping a lot of underprivileged children, who come from within and far places. It is a great privilege that Kwathu offers free education and meals from Monday to Friday which includes breakfast and lunch. Almost every day, people come with their children to be enrolled, but we cannot enroll them now because there is not enough places to accommodate them all.

VOLUNTEER’S
We are so happy to welcome Emilie Rasmussen from Denmark who has come to be with us from the 3rd of February to the 3rd of May 2018. We really appreciate the time and effort she is sacrificing to serve those in need. May God bless your stay.

During the period of her coluntary work, Emilie‘s main responsibilities/tasks will be:
1. Classroom assistance
2. Skill and human development with the children.
3. Help with management tasks.
4. Helping out with home work

DONATIONS
The Lord has been so faithful to us in the second month of 2018 and we give all the glory to Him. We are a family of faith and we solely rely on God’s provision through various donations made by our family and friends locally and abroad. Here is a list of the donations receive this month:

SUPPORT
We continue to ask for your support to make the Kwathu Ministries vision a success. These are the following projects actively running at the moment:

Kwathu Children’s Home

Kwathu Children’s Home is like any regular home set up. The needs of the home vary from

  • household groceries,
  • School fees,
  • School books,
  • Food

We also have electric bills and water bills. The house has a total of 19 children plus two mama’s and the cost of living doesn’t come cheap for us. We would really appreciate your support towards the running of this home. Please feel free to contribute anything as the Lord leads. Your support impacts the lives of many.

Kwathu Free Haven School

In our bid to provide free education to the community children, Kwathu has not been spared from the heavy cost of running the school.

For the smooth running of the school, we need $2,000 per month. This amount is divided between different needs such as:

  • Salaries for teachers an auxiliary staff
  • School teaching materials (Texts books, chalk etc…)
  • Pupils School materials (Books, pencils, erasers, rulers etc.)
  • Water Bills
  • Electric Bills
  • Groceries etc.

Any form of contribution towards the successful running of the school will be highly appreciated.

Feeding Program

The feeding program has been running successfully for over a year now. The success of this project has been determined by the number of children attending classes. We believe that learning on an empty stomach yields bad results. This is why we provide meals for all the 225 children and some community mothers. We provide both breakfast and lunch which translates to 450 meals a day from Monday through Thursday.

Your support towards the feeding program will be highly appreciated.
