February 2020 Newsletter

The Home

Rosaria celebrated her 14th birthday on February 1st, 2020. A BBQ was organised for her, which she celebrated with her brothers and sisters as well as the Director at his residence. They all enjoyed the special time of celebration and had fun.

We have two more house mothers that have joined the Kwathu family. The working schedule has changed as house mothers have been paired up and each pair works for two weeks every month. This change was made so that the home, or rather the children, could have more diverse team of mamas caring for them with different abilities and skill sets.

Austin reported for school in eighth grade at St. Raphael’s secondary school. This was after he was transferred from Kazungula boarding secondary school due to not feeling well often.

Austin is a very talented boy and has a dream of becoming an engineer/scientist.

The new children that were recently enrolled at Kwathu Free Haven School are settling in well as they have started adapting to the school system and making new friends.

Outreach Program

Kwathu Free Haven School staff spent time with a home visitations recently, with the help of staff from the administration team and one volunteer. The visitations were to access the vulnerability of our learners. The area which was visited was Ngwenya.

The School

Kwathu Free Haven School has made a Memorandum of Understanding with Mosi-O-Tunya College of Education. The college will be sending in some student teachers for observation and peer teaching. We had about thirteen (13) student teachers and one (1) lecturer who came for observation. Our grade four (4) class has been going to the same college for peer teaching. The college provides transport for them and breakfast, which is tea and bread. The college has further requested if there are qualified Kwathu staff and welcome part time lecturers. All children who want to train as teachers who are under Kwathu Ministries are welcome to be trained by the same college.

The school has been busy preparing for sports activities which will be held at Acacia International School, a competition for all Private Schools in Livingstone. The pupils have been training every day to defend their trophy and championship. In 2019 Kwathu Free Haven School won first place in athletics and ball games and hoping this will be sustained this year too.

Our three volunteers (Nicky, Emma and Justine) who came from South Africa, have been so helpful, they have decorated the baby class in an academic way, which we are so grateful for as a school. The painting and all decorations were done when both the baby class and reception classes were on midterm break.

The volunteers continue to help with clubs and assist lower grades with different activities.

The school computer laboratory is been prepared. The room was painted by teacher Don and some of the furniture is in place. All the window frames which had fallen off were fixed and what remains now is to fix some broken windows which are already bought by the school. We are grateful to Uncle Peter for helping to fix the windows.

We thank you for your support always.

Technology plays a major role in twenty-first century education. The new model of integrating technology into the curriculum means that computers are on demand throughout the school day.

A computer room is important in both private or government schools to enhance the scientific and technological research and invention capacity of pupils. If there is a computer room then students can invest their time in learning to improve basic computer skills with the help of the teachers. This will later help them to define their career goals, entrepreneurship and job opportunities. For skills development, students need to practice and to do this effectively pupils need a computer room.

It is for this reason that we at Kwathu are excited to finally have a computer room for our school. Computer studies is now part of the school curriculum.  We are thankful to one of our dear partners from Germany for providing us with the financial support to acquire the computers and also to renovate one of the rooms in the school, which is going to be used as a computer room.

We have painted the room and have made the tables for the computers. What is remaining is to get the benches where the children will be sitting as they learn. We also need to get a few small things like adapters, and the computer room will be ready for use. A lot can be done if we put our heads together and aim at making the world a better place.

VOLUNTEER’S CORNER

The volunteers have continued helping lower grades as well in diverse categories. They have also given their time to the less privileged kids through playing different games with them whilst building self-confidence in these children.
